About 100 dog/handler teams were in Prescott Valley the week of July 15-19 for the Arizona Law Enforcement Canine Association annual conference.

Along with testing for their annual certifications, teams practice during the day and night with scenarios they might face in actual law enforcement work. Handlers hear from a veterinarian who is familar with law enforcement K9s and the issues they may face, and attend other seminars.

On Tuesday night, teams put on an informational show for the public at Tim's Toyota Center, showing how K9s are used in law enforcement, highlighting the relationship between the dogs and their handlers, and answering questions from the public. After the event, audience members had a chance to meet the handlers and pet the dogs.

The evening's narrator explained that law enforcement dogs are chosen not only for their ability to apprehend criminals, but they also must have a solid, social temperament to interact with the general public.
