The Arizona Career Development Conference for DECA took place March 4-5 at the Phoenix Convention Center where more than 2,000 high school marketing students in Distributive Education Clubs of America competed in the largest state conference to date.

The Bradshaw Mountain High School DECA chapter sent 18 well-prepared and slightly anxious students to compete in this year's events - two more students than last year. Amidst the bright lights and excitement which is customary with DECA conferences, the students took part in events that included apparel and accessories marketing, human resource management, hospitality and tourism, sports and entertainment marketing, retail marketing, hotel and lodging management, and restaurant and food service marketing.

Bradshaw students walked away with 11 test medals (earned with scores of 70 percent and above), five finalist medals (awarded to the top students in their respective event during preliminaries), five championship medals (awarded to the top role plays winners in final competition), and five Arizona State trophies (awarded to the top five students in the state in their respective competition).

These five state trophy winners will join the other top students in the state to represent Arizona in this year's International Career Development Conference at the Anaheim Convention Center in California in April.

"When my students work hard and prepare well and then get the results, experiences and exposures provided by a student organization such as DECA, it is then that the intangible teachable moment happens and teenagers begin to realize their potential," says Mark Campbell, DECA advisor.

Campbell received the Rising Star award given to a chapter advisor who has consistently helped build membership throughout a school district and has actively participated in the growth and development of all Arizona DECA students and teachers.

DECA is the largest student organization in the world with members in countries that include Germany, China, Canada, Puerto Rico and Guam.

Test medal winners: Kruz McCullough, Alondra Castillo, Haley Ehresman, Rachel Schaetzle, Alex Lizarraga, Patrice Brinkman, Max Miller, Josiah Cilano, Corey Griffin, Christian Moncada, and RaeAnna Bergam.

Preliminary Finalist medals: RaeAnna Bergam, Corey Griffin, Max Miller, Josiah Cilano, and Christian Moncada.
