Bradshaw Mountain High School senior Sarah Ireland, far right, representing American Legion Gary Streeter Post 108 from Prescott Valley, won the American Legion Oratorical Area C (Northern Arizona) Contest at the Prescott VA Feb. 9 with her essay on the Constitution, then went on to place third at the State contest March 2 in Ahwatukee.

A Principal's List Honor Roll student, Ireland is active in Drama, and currently in "Taming of the Shrew."

Her first place award money of $300 and third place $500 will go toward her college education.

Alex Kate Halvey from Pusch Ridge Christian Academy won first place and $1,500; Andrew Ding, Hamilton High, earned $800 for second.

At the state contest, about 80 people enjoyed lunch with American Legion State Commander Ken Dowse and Auxiliary State President Kathy Medalen. Halvey now competes in the National Finals April 19 -21 in Indianapolis for a shot at an $18,000 scholarship.

The purpose of the American Legion Oratorical contest is to help students develop a better understanding of the Constitution.
