Weather, timing prevent rescue of child from flood
When Mayer Fire Chief Glenn Brown got the call about a family of four stuck in flood waters north of Highway 69 near Chauncey Ranch Thursday night, he knew he and other rescuers would be in a fight for all four lives. Though three family members survived, that doesn't take away the pain of losing Jacob Baudek, 6, to the raging waters.

Some state parks in Yavapai County are set to close after the Arizona State Parks Board took drastic budget cutting measures Friday.

Cops brighten holiday for 85 local children
Eighty-five emergency vehicles' lights flashed and sirens blared in a procession from Prescott Valley to Prescott on Saturday as officers brought 85 children to Wal-Mart to "Shop with a Cop."

"Neveah loved driving in the police car," Sgt. Georgia Davies of the Prescott Police said. "She talked the whole way over and really liked the siren."

This program, in its 12th year, pairs children in need with officers who help them shop for holiday gifts for their family, said Michelle Medina of the Prescott Police Department.

Observe fire prevention for life, not just for a week
The National Fire Protection Association has declared this week - Oct. 4-10 - as Fire Prevention Week, and with the recent devastating fires in Mayer and Prescott, awareness cannot be emphasized enough.

But Central Yavapai Fire District's assistant chief, Charlie Cook, said his department doesn't observe the week as such, and for good reason: CYFD teaches fire safety year-round.

Bike and Build teams with Habitat for Humanity
Start May 15 on the North Carolina coast at the Atlantic Ocean. Rise at five a.m. Pedal a bicycle 75 miles in the rain. Sleep on a gym floor. Repeat for 65 days for 3,513 miles with variations, including nine days of home-building. End in San Diego July 18.

That's the schedule 31 young people, most of them college students averaging about 21 years of age, have followed this summer on the Bike and Build program to benefit Habitat for Humanity.
