More than 650 attendees from 22 schools, including Bradshaw Mountain High School, attended the DECA Western District Competition at Grand Canyon University on Jan. 21. The conference is the preseason event before the state competition in March.

Twenty-three Bradshaw DECA students took part in the competition with winners bringing home 15 medals.

Test Medal winners are Evan Wood, Patrice Brinkman, Darcie Hill, Josh Lewis, Hunter Powell, Hayley Ehresman and Kennady First. Role Play winners are Darcie Hill, Hunter Powell, Josh Lewis, Danielle Quan and Brittany Cleveland. Overall Event Medal winners are Brittany Cleveland, Josh Lewis and Hunter Powell.

The awards included events in marketing, management, finance, hospitality and tourism.

Mark Campbell, DECA advisor said he was pleased with the outcome. Students who competed for the first time now have an idea of the make-up of competition, he added.

The Bradshaw Mountain High School DECA students participated in a "You're Next" project spearheaded by Alondra Castillo and Darcie Hill, seniors who are in their second year of marketing classes. The event was part of a 30-page research paper written in accordance with National DECA to create awareness of the DECA student organization at the middle school level.

Within the DECA program are many competitive events in marketing, management, hospitality and finance. In this public relations event, 36 students from Glassford Hill Middle School took part. They were students involved in leadership groups on campus, including Panthers in Action, student council, journalism, and National Junior Honor Society.

The competition reflected what happens at a DECA state or international event. Students were judged on a 25-question test and two role-play events. One role play for individuals was based on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics), the second on the Six Pillars of Character.

Students had 10 minutes to prepare a response to judges and 10 minutes to present the role play. This required creativity, knowledge, professionalism and presentation skills, all of which are taught through DECA.

The five top test scores went to Cecily Sharp, Keigan Willingham, Kevin Moore, Davin Magnifico, and Hayden Ruiz. STEAM role-play winners are Trytan White, Robert Poole, Jonathan Campa, Darren Pinaire, Hannah Segerra.

The Six Pillars of Character roleplay winners are Hannah Segerra, Max Roth, Amy Estrada, Kevin Moore, Trytan White, Cecily Tharp. The Top Three Overall winners are Trytan White, Darren Pinaire, Cecily Tharp.

The Bradshaw DECA students will take their public relations project to the State competition in March.
