The Prescott Valley United Methodist Church presents its third annual Golden Gates Russian dancing children's program at 4 p.m. on January 24. Admission is no cost, but a free will offering would be appreciated as this donation helps the dance group with their traveling expenses.
The dancers travel the world sharing music, dance and encouraging audience interaction.
For the past 10 years a Golden Gates group has been touring for 10 years across the United States, introducing traditional Russian and Georgian music, singing and dancing.
This year, Nafset Chenib, lyric coloratura soprano, will join the group to perform Classical, American and Russian folksongs after the Golden Gates performance.
Nafset was born in a small town in the Republic of Adyghea, part of the Russian Federation. Her name means "giving light." Nafset lost her eyesight early in life.
When she was six years old, Nafset's mother made one of the most important decisions in her daughter's life, enrolling her in the only musical boarding school for blind and poorly sighted children in Russia.
She began her studies playing the piano, and later continued her studies as a vocalist when she attended the Nikolay Rimskiy-Korsakov Musical College from 2005 to 2009. She now attends the Victor Popov Academy of Choral Arts in Russia and will graduate in June 2014.
Nafset performed in several festivals and competitions while in school and became the laureate of more than 12 of them, while maintaining excellent grades. In 2005 she gave her first recital with the Krasnodar Philharmonic, captivating the audience with classical music and her magnificent soprano voice.
In 2009, she performed with the world renowned St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
Rotarians Joseph and Olga Waesche, who help coordinate the Golden Gates are hosting trained opera singer Nafset Chenib, from Moscow.
The church is at 8944 E. Sommer Drive in Prescott Valley. For details, call 928-772-6366.
