Bright sunlight and smiles warmed the production rooms of the newest location of Yavapai Exceptional Industries on Monday, its first day of business at 8490 E. Eastridge Drive in the Eastridge business park.
Executive Director Brad Newman said 2.5 years ago he had to choose whether to expand the YEI's Antelope Point Industries location on Lake Valley or find a new place for the business that provides training and employment opportunities and group housing for adults with developmental disabilities in the quad-city area.
"This building became available, and the build out was quick and smooth," he said Monday.
Besides several rooms already set up for production with tables and supplies, the building has a large warehouse, a lunchroom with five of YEI's popular picnic tables and kitchen gear, lockers for employees, a conference room, and a front office space for administrators.
"There's lots of room, I like the space," said employee Heather Blakley. "And there's a good view out here," she added, referring to Mingus Mountain and the wide, open space toward the east.
Stepping Stones donated the office furniture, Newman said. Only small details remain, such as window coverings on the south side of the building and an outlet or two for another microwave in the lunchroom.
