Special to the Tribune

In the Spring of 2011, the Lake Valley staff voted unanimously to create a Schoolyard Habitat. During the 2012-2013 school year, planning meetings took place with Mara Kack, Schoolyard Habitat coordinator from the Highlands Nature Center, to set up the 2013-2014 timeline.

Students, parents and staff have planted about 40 different plants during two workdays in September. One of the school's Girl Scout groups also is helping with this project. The Habitat will rest until the spring. Lake Valley is the fourth school in the Humboldt Unified School District to partner with the Highlands Center and create a Schoolyard Habitat. It is a real community effort to implement this program.
