Prescott Valley Tribune
Three women from the Prescott Valley and surrounding areas are serious about honoring those they know who have suffered or died from breast cancer, and helping to stop the disease.
Gloria Ruiz, Margarita Grant and Angela Frederick will make up team Valley Girls. These Tri-City residents have committed to walk 60 miles in the Susan G. Komen Phoenix 3-Day®, along with thousands of other women and men who are walking to make a personal difference in the fight to end breast cancer.
Team "Valley Girls" already has embarked on a physical and emotional journey in preparing for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day®. Like other Komen 3-Day participants, Team "Valley Girls" have spent months training for the event's physical demands and raising at least $2,300, for each team members, to help support innovative breast cancer research, scientific programs and community outreach programs.
The three womens' dedication and preparation will culminate as they walk 60 miles over the course of three days.
The Susan G. Komen 3-Day is the boldest breast cancer event of its kind, with equally bold commitments. Participants are asked to walk farther and raise more money than any other event. However, the choice to participate was easy for team "Valley Girls." Breast cancer doesn't just impact one person. It impacts an entire family and an entire community.
The Susan G. Komen Phoenix 3-Day® - from the Opening Ceremony on Friday morning, Nov. 8 to Closing Ceremony on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 10 - is full of meaning, emotion and celebration. Walkers cover about 20 miles a day with hundreds of dedicated volunteers and crew members supporting them along the way.
Each year in the United States, more than 200,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women and nearly 2,000 cases are diagnosed in men. Locally, Yavapai County Community Health Services has received grants from Susan G. Komen to provide mammograms at no cost to women who would not be able to pay for this test themselves.
Ruiz, Grant and Frederick are working to reach their fundraising goal by Nov. 4. To make a donation, visit http://alturl.com/dc6vg or for more information, email Ruiz at email@example.com.
