Free emergency preparedness fair Saturday

In the wake of the Doce and Yarnell Hill fires Quad-city residents have a unique opportunity Saturday, Oct. 19 to get free expert advice and see demonstrations and displays about how to be prepared for an emergency.

The public is invited to attend the annual Community Preparedness Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot area just north of the Prescott Valley Town Center near Harkins Theatre and Freedom Station. This event is free to the public.

See the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office Rescue 1 Helicopter and Command Post vehicle. Meet Deputy Do-Right and the YCSO's K9 team.

Other participants with personnel and equipment will include Central Yavapai Fire District, YCSO Search and Rescue Team, The American Red Cross, Community Emergency Response Teams (C.E.R.T.), area police departments and many other health, safety and disaster preparedness experts.

Discover valuable mini-emergency response tips that can save a life. Learn how you can maintain effective communications during an emergency or evacuation though HAM, CB and family radio equipment. Get information on pet and livestock emergency care and response. Learn how to store water effectively or locate and purify water during an emergency. See demonstrations and displays on how to cook food when power is out using Dutch ovens and solar cooking. Learn how to build a 72-hour kit or vehicle emergency kit and see examples. Get how-to instruction on food storage, preparing freeze-dried foods and wet- or dry-pack canning. Get realistic advice on being financially prepared in an uncertain economic climate.

Ask questions and learn timesaving tips from local gardening experts. Learn about standard and raised bed gardening and hoop houses.
