Letter: Accounts offer another schooling option for parents

Editor:

As the school year winds down, if you are a parent who knows your child would benefit from a change in school, mark May 1 on your calendar - the last day to apply for one of Arizona's unique education savings accounts for the 2013-14 school year.

Education savings accounts are bank accounts parents use to make educational purchases for their child instead of the state paying for their child attending traditional public school. The Arizona Department of Education deposits money into an account and parents then use a debit card or online services such as PayPal to purchase textbooks, online classes, or therapy services or pay private school or college tuition. Over 300 children are using an account this school year to pay for the education that best meets their needs.

About one out of every five Arizona public school students will be eligible for an account in the 2013-14 school year. Children with special needs, children stuck in "D" and "F" failing schools, children of active-duty military families, and children adopted out of the state foster system are all eligible to apply.

The application is on the Department of Education website (azed.gov) and it takes just a few minutes.

Families should act quickly to make sure next year they can look back and know they gave their children the best education experience they could create.
