11/14/2012 12:53:00 PM Editorial Give a little, make a big difference during holidays season
While shopping for your Thanksgiving meal, if you financially are able, why not pick up something extra for a family that might not otherwise enjoy a feast?
The Yavapai Food Bank struggles year-round - and especially during the holidays - to provide enough food for the growing number of hungry people who have lost jobs because of illness, the depressed economy or other difficult circumstances beyond their control. This time of year that is 600-700 families each week.
This year's goal is to fill 2,500 holiday food boxes with a turkey and all the trimmings of a traditional meal. Any additional will go toward Christmas boxes. Monetary donations also are welcome.
In the coming weeks, several organizations are conducting food drives to benefit the Yavapai Food Bank, which also supplies many area food pantries.
Saturday is the Letter Carrier food drive. Donate at Safeway stores in Prescott Valley, Prescott or Chino Valley or leave nonperishable food items next to your mailbox. Monday, the annual Flying High Turkey Drive is from noon-6 p.m. at Fry's stores.
It doesn't take a lot of money. If each of us contributes just a little, we can make a big difference in a lot of lives this holiday season.
