Editorial: Volunteers are crucial to these local events

Prescott Valley and Dewey-Humboldt residents had a lot for which to be proud this week with Little League opening ceremonies, made possible by volunteers, and the Special Olympics Regional Games, also largely made possible by volunteers.

Little League fields many teams with hundreds of players, and they need an army of people to give their time for the kids, not the least of which are coaches, donors, and all of the other behind-the-scenes saints who make this experience happen for the youngsters.

Special Olympics has much the same dynamic. The volunteers are people who care for these special athletes in our community enough to give them the thrill of doing their best, and a chance to excel with a crowd of people cheering them on. Just the look on their faces is worth the hard work of coaching, setting up, providing awards and food, and all the other details involved.

This year, several therapy dog groups joined the volunteers at Special Olympics, giving the athletes and even other volunteers the comfort of numerous fuzzy admirers.

Volunteers are the backbone of these events - so if you are one of them, consider yourself sincerely thanked and admired!
