With fire restrictions and forest closures, I wasn't able to get out much this summer. I did however, manage to visit Fossil Creek the day before it closed back in early June, and also got to West Clear Creek in the Bullpen Wilderness. At each location I saw a strange and wondrous sight - a lovely mermaid! I know it's hard to believe, but it's true. I offer evidence. Her name is Maizie; she's the Grand Canyon mermaid, and her website is listed below.

Fossil Creek has since re-opened, and I think all fire restrictions have been lifted in the state. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be careful when building campfires in the forests. Make sure those fires are dead out when you leave a site for any length of time.

Just heard thunder and saw a flash of lightning in Prescott Valley, so I'm crossing my fingers for bucketloads of precipitation to further green things up. Hoping to get in a hike this weekend.

Visit Maizie's website at www.maiziemermaid.com.
