Bradshaw Mountain High's baseball team has advanced to the Division 2 state tournament's winners' bracket semifinals after nipping Cave Creek Cactus Shadows, 2-1, Thursday at Surprise Stadium.
In a winners' bracket quarterfinal, the third-seeded Bears rode a solid pitching performance from southpaw Jeremy Moyer on their way to the big victory.
Moyer threw a complete-game four-hitter, striking out a pair and issuing only one walk in seven innings.
"He was really clutch when we needed it," Bradshaw coach Randy Clifford said. "It was a great game."
At the dish, Moyer aided his own cause by going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Like 11th-seeded Cactus Shadows, the Bears registered just four hits on the afternoon.
In the first inning, Bradshaw's Bryan Villagran (1-for-3) led off with a double and Cohen Heckathorn moved him over to third on a sacrifice. Dallas Riggs (1-for-3, RBI) subsequently drove in Villagran.
Riggs would later plate the game-winning run. The Bears' only other hit in the contest came off the bat of Steve Hernandez.
In the winners' bracket semifinals today at Tempe Diablo Stadium, Bradshaw will battle No. 2-seed Tucson Sahuaro. First pitch is at 4 p.m.
Sahuaro run-ruled seventh-seeded Buckeye Verrado, 11-1, in five innings in their quarters clash Thursday night at Surprise Stadium.
If the Bears beat Sahuaro, they would play the victor of the other winners' bracket semifinal pitting fourth-seeded Nogales against No. 1 Phoenix Greenway at 6:30 tonight, also at Diablo Stadium.
The winners' bracket final will be played at 6:30 p.m. next Thursday, May 15, at Maryvale Baseball Stadium. Whichever team wins that game will punch a ticket to the D-2 state championship and take on the losers' bracket champion at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at a site TBD.
If Bradshaw falls to Sahuaro, it would drop into the losers' bracket to face the winner of an elimination game pitting No. 12 Gila Ridge versus No. 8 Flagstaff at 4 p.m. next Tuesday at Maryvale Baseball Stadium. The loser of that contest will be eliminated.
Gila Ridge and Flagstaff will play at 4 p.m. Saturday at Surprise Stadium to decide who moves on in the losers' bracket.
In the second round of the Division 3 tournament today, No. 9 seed Chino Valley will lock horns with defending state champion and No. 8-seeded Fountain Hills. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Field No. 3 at Surprise Sports Complex.
The victor will play the winner of today's No. 16 Scottsdale Christian-No. 1 Bisbee second-round game in the quarterfinals at 11 a.m. Saturday, also on Field No. 3 at Surprise Sports Complex. The loser will be eliminated.
In the second round of the D-4 tournament today, No. 16 Bagdad faces No. 1 Desert Christian. That game will start at 6:30 p.m. on Field No. 3 at Goodyear Baseball Complex.
The victor will tackle the winner of today's No. 9 Joy Christian-No. 8 Miami second-round game in the quarters at 11 a.m. Saturday, also at Field No. 3 at Goodyear Baseball Complex. The loser of that contest will be eliminated as well.
