Longtime Bradshaw Mountain cross country coach Mike Simon said prior to the Division II Section I State Championships this past Friday that the relatively young Bears had no margin for error in the loaded sectional competition.

The Lady Bears made no errors. With sophomores Hannah Madler, Lauren Hickok and Alicia Cornejo, and junior Maria Gonzalez leading the way, along with senior Rachel Zea, Bradshaw qualified for state competition this Saturday. Athena Dias and Elssy Estrada also will make the trip.

"They ran awesome," Simon said.

Only the top 11 of the 21 teams competing advanced to state.

"Both the boys' and girls' defending state champs are in our region," Simon said. "We have a lot of young runners, but they've been doing really good for not having run cross country before."

For the Bradshaw gents, Saul Martinez missed qualifying by 7 seconds, placing 29. The top 25 individuals advanced.

Sophomore Ben Dike was just 22 seconds off the mark.

Div. II state cross country championships take place at 9:15 a.m. at the Cave Creek Golf Course, 15202 N. 19th Ave., in Phoenix.
