As training camp opened Monday at Prescott Valley's Tim's Toyota Center, two dozen hopefuls are working hard on the Arizona Sundogs ice to make the final roster.

Most grew up in Canada, but a half dozen are U.S. citizens. They come in having played for teams all around the North American continent and also in Europe. They range from high school to Ivy League graduates, but all are rough-and-tumble scrappers.

New head coach Kevin Colley and Gordon Burnett, who has moved from the player roster to serve as assistant coach, are leading the charge.

The public can see them all by attending the 60- to 90-minute training camp practices today through Friday and next week Monday and Tuesday, starting at 10 a.m. Special session at 6:30 p.m. today is open only to current season ticket holders.

The youngest camp invitee is 21-year-old rookie goalkeeper Cam Lanigan, and the eldest is veteran center Darcy Verot, 37.

Only five players return from this past season's team: forwards Kevin Baker, Jason Morgan and Johan Ryd, defenseman Matt McCready, and goalkeeper David Brown.

The Sundogs open their season on the road Oct. 18 for a 3-game series against the Brampton Beast. The home opener is Oct. 25 versus the Missouri Mavericks. The organization will honor the fallen Granite Mountain Hotshots with special ceremonies and equipment at that game.
