The Bradshaw Mountain Bears recorded a 6-3 win over Canyon Del Oro in the first round of state team tennis in Prescott Valley this past Tuesday, then downed visiting No. 12 Greenway 5-0 yesterday before ever playing doubles. With nine total matches, the competition ends with the first team to get five wins.

Last week, three-set battles went to: No. 1 Max Miller, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2; No. 2 William Waidelich, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5; and No. 6 Daniel Schmuckler, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. Hunter Powell won at No. 5 in two sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Kyle Jewell and Austin Powell, playing Nos. 3 and 4, took their matches to three sets but couldn't pull out wins. Jewell's scores were 6-4, 1-6, 2-6, and Powell went 7-6, 2-6, 4-6.

Miller and Waidelich dominated doubles No. 1, 10-1, while Schmuckler and Hunter Powell won 10-8 at No. 3. Jewell and Austin Powell drew out their battle of the No. 2 pairs to a 10-8 loss.

In ladies team first-round play, host and No. 6-seed Phoenix Arcadia bumped the No. 11 Lady Bears 5-0 on April 24. During Friday's individual quarterfinal competition at the Paseo Racquet Club, Bears doubles duo Miller and Waidelich, seeded 8th, fell 6-1, 6-1, to Ironwood Ridge No. 1 Cody Petford and Ryan Knox. The No. 1 duo ultimately lost the state championship game 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, on Saturday to No. 2 from Notre Dame Prep.

Lady Bears doubles No. 5 Delaina Harris and Athena Bowman, after a slow start and a first set loss Friday night, upset No. 4 duo Janine and Jeunne Fernando from Sabino, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. That put them in Saturday's semi-finals, pitted against the No. 1 seed, Catalina Foothills' Rachana and Kirtana Bhat. The Bhat sisters lived up to their ranking by downing the Lady Bears 6-0, 6-1, and claiming the state championship 6-2, 6-4, over No. 2 Ironwood Ridge later that day.

Winning yesterday were: Miller, 6-2, 6-1; Waidelich, 6-4, 6-0; Austin Powell 6-0, 6-2; Hunter Powell 6-4, 6-0; and Schmuckler, 6-2, 6-0. Jewell was leading 6-4 when his match was stopped.

The Bears advance to Glendale's Paseo Racquet Center at 9 a.m. on May 3 for a quarterfinal match against the winner of No. 1 Notre Dame Prep/No. 8 Sunnsyslope. Finals are 2 p.m. May 4.
