Wrestling Bears bring home hardware

Bradshaw wrestled in a multi-dual at Deer Valley this past Thursday that also included Goldwater and Liberty. The Bears' lost 54-21 to Goldwater; 68-17 to Liberty; and 57-24 to Deer Valley.

"Even though we were not successful in the team scores, we saw lots of positive improvements from a host of wrestlers," Bradshaw head coach Gordon Cobb said.

He cited Sage Cook as the Bears' standout wrestler of the meet. Cook pinned both his Liberty and Deer Valley opponents in the first periods of action, while filling in for the injured A.J. Hash.

"Sage kept good position against both opponents to score the pins," Cobb added.

Bradshaw spent Friday and Saturday in Camp Verde for the Cowboys' tournament, and took 8th out of 16 teams, with 299 points.

Individually, the top eight wrestlers in each weight class competed for a place on the medal stand.

Bradshaw nearly tripled its medal count from 2011, with five wrestlers bringing home hardware.

High finisher for the Bears was sophomore Peter Hodan, who placed second at 225 pounds.

Earning fifth were sophomore Russ Dodge, 170, and freshman John Trout, 220.

Sixth place at 120 pounds went to junior Anthony Monroe.

Senior David Snell placed eighth in the 160-pound weight class.

Cobb said Hodan wrestled his middle school nemesis from Mingus High School, Wyatt Midkiff, in the finals, and that Trout, a junior varsity replacement wrestler, "did an outstanding job in his final bouts."

"As a very young freshman, we expect great things in the future from this young man," Cobb said of Midkiff. "Camp Verde hosted a great tournament. I'm so proud of the wrestlers, who just keep improving each match, and I am so honored to be their coach. They are outstanding, hardworking young men. I look forward to continued improvement throughout the remainder of the season."

Bradshaw's wrestlers will battle the Bulldogs in Kingman today. Saturday, the Bears host their all-day JV Open tournament.
