Kyle Chipchura's two goals and three assists during the Arizona Sundogs' perfect 3-0 week over the Denver Cutthroats has earned him the Oakley Player of the Week for period ending Nov. 11, 2012, in the Central Hockey League. Kyle Chipchura's two goals and three assists during the Arizona Sundogs' perfect 3-0 week over the Denver Cutthroats has earned him the Oakley Player of the Week for the Central Hockey League. Chipchura leads the CHL with a +11 goal differential rating.
Arizona (6-2-2) now has its best start since the 2007-08 season when the Sundogs were 7-2-1. They ended that season kissing the Ray Miron's President's Cup. Currently the Sundogs hold second place in the CHL with 14 points, two behind the Allen Americans.
The 'Dogs started their sweep Wednesday with a 5-3 win.
The expansion team Cutthroats got the initial goal early in the first period. But Jeff Kyrzakos equalized on the power play with assistance from Mario Larocque and Cody Purves.
The first frame ended in a battle of the No. 8s - Arizona's Kyle Hood and Denver's Sean Zimmerman - who took their penalties into the second with the teams skating 4-on-4.
With both squads at full strength, Derek LeBlanc found the back of the net to take the 2-1 lead. Kyle Chipchura and Chad Nehring assisted on the goal.
The Cutthroats tied it less than two minutes later on their own power play, but within four minutes Kyle Schussler regained the 3-2 lead for Arizona with help from Chipchura.
Kyrzakos added his second goal of the game - the third in the period and fourth on the night - on assists from Purves and Morgan with 4:54 left in the second period.
Third period penalties by both teams kept things uneven on the ice with plenty of 5-on-3, 4-on-3 and 5-on-4 skating.
Denver took advantage to close the gap to 4-3 before the Sundogs used the man advantage to widen it again. Chipchura and Schussler assisted Nehring on the fifth goal.
Adam Russo got the win in the net, turning aside 23 shots.
Friday, the Sundogs beat the visitors 5-2, with David Brown stopping 32 of 34 shots by the Cutthroats.
Arizona dominated the first period with a goal from Johan Ryd and two from Kyrzakos. Kyle Hood, Adam Smyth and David Schemko each recorded assists.
The Sundogs led 3-1 headed into the second period. Larocque's power play goal increased the total to 4 and Nehring's shorthanded tally made it 5-1 to close the second.
Denver got off a final goal with two minutes remaining in the game.
Saturday's battle saw the penalty box enjoy lots of company from both teams, but resulted in a 6-4 victory for the home squad.
The Sundogs never trailed after Schussler got the first frame's lone goal, assisted by LeBlanc and Chipchura.
Mikael Bedard and Chipchura collected second period goals -Chipchura's first as a Sundog, before Denver got one past Russo to make it 3-1.
The Cutthroats added to their total early in the third and closed to within one point before tallies from LeBlanc, Chipchura and Ryd put the game out of reach.
Russo blocked 34 shots on the night.
The Sundogs are on the road this week with games in Rapid City, Denver and Wichita. They return home for a 3-game Thanksgiving series with the Allen Americans, Nov. 21, 23 and 24.
