Circumstances contrived to decrease the number of teams at this year's Bradshaw Mountain High School Cross Country Invitational. Several teams cancelled at the last minute to familiarize themselves with the upcoming sectional meet's course by running at a Sandra Day O'Connor meet.
The five teams that did compete Saturday in the Bears' invite at the Bradshaw Mountain Middle School got a real workout on the extended, 3.2 mile-course.
With some top runners missing because they were taking the SAT and a few more off on family vacations for Fall Break, others got a chance to step it up for the local squads.
The result was a double team victory for Prescott's Badgers.
The Prescott girls placed first with 39 points, followed by Mingus Union, 45, Chino Valley, 65, Bradshaw Mountain, 75.
The Prescott boys also scored 39 points, with Bradshaw, 45, Mingus, 52, and Chino Valley, 83, following.
Buckeye did not field complete teams.
Bradshaw's Saul Martinez and Cody Sharp placed 6th and 7th, respectively, in 17:49 and 17:59. Satchel Clifford, 18:56, was 9th and Tycein Chaney, 18:58, 10th. Elijah Shaffer rounded out the 5-man scoring by placing 13th, in 19:17.
Desiree Woodruff led the Lady Bears in 7th place with 22:51. Athena Dias was 12th, 23:37; Erika Meza, 18th, 24:56; Kyanna Bruner, 20th, 26:35; and Hannah Ashburn, 22nd, 27:38.
The Bears' next competition will be the Yavapai County Championships Oct. 17 in Prescott.
