The Bradshaw Mountain cross country team came close to perfection this past Wednesday, winning both the boys' and girls' races at the first home meet of the season.
The Bears took the top five places for a perfect 15 points while the Lady Bears claimed the first four spots and placed their fifth runner in the top 10 to earn 20 points.
Glendale Cactus was second with 59 for the boys and 53 for the girls. Laveen's Betty H. Fairfax placed third with 85 and 68. Cortez (Phoenix) also competed but fielded incomplete teams.
For Bradshaw's gents, Ryan Madler (16:38) edged teammate Esteban Morales (16:39) for first place on the 3.1-mile course around Bradshaw Mountain Middle School.
Following in third, fourth and fifth were Randy Ayala (17:16), Saul Martinez (17:21) and Ryan Petzoldt (17:23).
The Bears had three more runners in the top 10: C.J. Unruh (7th), Austin Turner (8th), and Nick Carder (10th). All in all, Bradshaw boasted 15 of the top 20 runners. Twenty Bears raced.
Only five Bradshaw ladies participated, but each was a major contributor to the win. Kayla Heglund (20:43) was the overall winner of the girls' race. Desiree Woodruff (20:57), Gabby Jeffries (21:14) and Hannah Ashburn (23:35) came in second, third and fourth, respectively, while Christina Bonine (25:20) was 10th.
Today Bradshaw plays host to Prescott, Avondale Agua Fria and Peoria Sunrise Mountain. The meet starts at 4 p.m. at BMMS.
