Bradshaw Mountain's Bears (7-3) won the AIA Div. III Section 4 title and earned their first state playoff berth in three seasons. In the first round of post-season play, the No. 12-ranked Bears will take on No. 5 Peoria at the Panthers' home field at 7 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 8.
The Bears lost their regular season closer to Queen Creek, 46-26, this past Friday on the road.
The host Bulldogs scored all their points unanswered until midway through the third quarter, when senior tailback Jose Carlos carried the ball in 5 yards for the first of his two touchdowns on the night. Carlos would end with 110 yards rushing on 17 carries. Angel Gonzalez carried 8 times for another 85 yards, scoring once. Daniel Otero also rushed for a TD.
The Bears picked up 268 rushing yards on the night, but only 56 passing.
Bradshaw head coach Jared Woodruff called Peoria a storied program, with three state championships to its name.
"They're undefeated, but we haven't played them before, so it will be interesting to see how they play," Woodruff said. "They have a similar offense to ours. They mix it up and they're fast. We'll try to throw them some surprises."
Woodruff praised his seniors for playing hard this season, despite playing yet again for a new coach. He singled out Shane Evans as a hard worker who he advised over the summer to attend summer school.
"Shane's done a good job keeping his grades up, when other kids I told the same thing to didn't do that. He played hard on offense and defense. He's been a big part of this season," the coach said.
Offensive lineman Miguel Martinez attended every practice, and started every game.
"Miguel's done everything we asked him to do. He was our most consistent player," Woodruff said.
Two defensive standouts are Colton Audsley and Lupe Valdez.
"Colton - obviously - and Lupe have defensively done a good job all year long, giving good effort," he said.
Woodruff said that as far as physical size is concerned, Peoria might be a bit smaller than some other Valley teams.
"Hopefully we show up and give them a good game," he said.
Friday's first round victor will advance to quarterfinals next Friday, Nov. 15, to play the winner of the No. 4 Queen Creek/No.13 Cactus game.
