Saying "28 straight" has a nice ring to it. But the Bradshaw Mountain girls' basketball team is thinking beyond winning streaks this late in the postseason.

The Div. 2 Section 2 top-seeded Bears did extend their streak to 28 after downing 4-seed Flagstaff 51-43 Thursday night in the sectional semifinals. The Bears (28-1 overall), who already punched their ticket to next week's state tournament, advance to Saturday night's sectional tournament championship against 3-seed Thunderbird.

Saturday's championship won't impact too much for Bradshaw in terms of seedings for the state dance. The team has already locked up a first-round bye plus home court advantage.

And that winning streak that seems endless is far from their minds right now.

"We don't talk about it. There's a bigger picture at hand than any individual stats or any records that we may carry right now. Our main focus is that last state game," BMHS head coach Efren Badilla said Thursday night.

"There's one thing that we can't teach, and that's the determination and heart to continue their run. They show that day in and day out. That's obvious. They definitely play great as a team. They look to lift each other up, and that's the name of the game."

On Thursday, the Bears led 14-3 after one period of play, and held off a pesky Flagstaff bunch. Kylie Morris led Bradshaw with 16 points, and Kirsten Smith scored 11.

The Bears breathed a sigh of relief when they got some good postgame news. Dacie Clark left the game with what appeared to be a nasty ankle injury, but Badilla reported Thursday night that it looked to be a minor sprain and that Clark should be OK.

The game was played at the neutral site of Prescott High School, after the previous site, Greenway High School in Phoenix, was scrapped Thursday when the two northern-area schools decided to stay up north for the matchup.

The Bears will face 3-seed Thunderbird in Saturday's sectional championship at 5:45 p.m. at Greenway. Thunderbird downed 2-seed Liberty 53-47 on Thursday.

The 24-team state tournament opens Feb. 13. The Div. 2 state championship takes place Feb. 23 at Arena in Glendale.
