Obituary: Janice (Jan) Marie Gielda

Janice (Jan) Marie Gielda (nee Cluck), was called home Nov. 16, 2009 to our Father to continue to praise Him with saints in heaven from a new vantage point on.

Jan was an extra-ordinary wife and golf partner, exemplary mother, loving and doting grandmother, a caring and tender great grandmother, and an attentive, and faithful friend.

Jan knew service and lived it in her daily life at home, at work, at church and in the community. She was sensitive to the feelings of all she encountered and generous with her time and talent to all in need. She lovingly converted her father from a crotchety, hardened veteran of two wars into a thankful and warm man. Near the end of his life, for the first time, she heard the wonderful words, "I love you, Honey." It was a gift from God to a good and faithful servant.

Jan's life was taken in a head-on collision by a young man who crossed the median into her vehicle in southern Illinois just an hour below where she spent her formative years. Charges are pending.

She is survived by a family who loved her as she loved others; her husband (Richard) of 46 years; her sons, Scott, (Catherine), Steven (Sherry), Stacy (Liz); daughter Melissa Barry (Michael); and eight grandchildren, Kayla Gielda, Jenna Wiley, Steven Wiley, Chase Gielda, CJ Wiley, Madison Gielda, Katie Elmer and Andrew Dwarshuis. She was also blessed with four great-grandchildren. Beyond her immediate family, she is also survived by a sister Jacqueline (Jackie); nephew Douglas; niece Marnie (Noah); four great-nieces; and two great-nephews.

A Celebration of Jan's life will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009 at Lee Funeral Home in Owings, Md. The memorial mass will be Nov. 25, 2009 in Dunkirk, Md. at The Covenant Community of Jesus the Good Shepherd. Internment will be in Clinton, Md. at Resurrection Cemetery. A memorial service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Dec. 16 at St. Germaine's Catholic Community, Prescott Valley, Ariz. In lieu of flowers, Jan would appreciate a donation to The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (ww5.komen.org) or the American Foundation for the Blind, where donations can be sent to AFB, Attn: Audrey Taylor, 2 Penn Plaza, Suite 1102 New York, NY 10121. Please put Jan Gielda in the memo of your check; or by credit card at www.afb.org.
