Another holiday season among us

 Chris A. Porter

As 2008 comes to a close, I've taken some time to ponder the number of accomplishments Prescott Newspapers Inc.'s internet division and I have completed this year. There have been quite a few.

Towards the end of 2007, we were knee deep in launching WNI's site redesigns. We launched the new Daily Courier site, dCourier.com, in June. It was the first relaunch for PNI & Western News&Info, and this website template was used to redesign the rest of WNI's publications. The template adds new features such as blogging, video and milestones sections as well as e-alerts and RSS feed functionality that was previously unavailable in older formats.

Since it was the first to be launched, the dCourier.com site was a sort of barometer for how successful the rest of the relaunches could be. One very favorable indicator is the Associated Press Managing Editors award for Best Web Site that dCourier.com received in May of this year. I hope our other redesigned publication sites will win even more in coming years.

We launched the new Prescott Valley Tribune site, PVtrib.com, in August 2007 and followed up in September with the rest of PNI's publications: bigbugnews.com and the new Chino Valley Review site (CVRnews.com). We ended 2007 with the relaunch of the Verde Newspapers sites, The Verde Independent and Camp Verde Bugle.

The beginning of '08 was mostly spent with training and helping various staffs maintain the redesigned sites until April allowed us time to launch the Kingman and Golden Valley (now merged into Kingman) sites. We finished the rest of the WNI publication site relaunches, Williams, Grand Canyon, Flagstaff and Blythe, Ca. in June and July.

In the last half of '08, I was tasked with redesigns of non-publication sites, creating new web applications, building a new Courier e-edition, training, expanding upon my cadre of company tutorial documents, producing video content, editorial cartoons, taking over maintaining sites for 2 non-dailies and a host of other things I haven't mentioned or forgotten.

So, it's been a busy but productive year, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I hope to be right here, summing up the accomplishments of '09 around this time next year. I wish the best Holiday season to you and yours, and I'll be providing more insights next year!
