Blog: More than 14 years ago, the Sullivans rescued Murphy

After I wrote about our old dog Imij, and our celebration of his 14th birthday, I received this story about the 14 1/2-year-old Murphy from Marilyn and Jack Sullivan of Prescott Valley.

"I really enjoyed reading your Dec. 1 article about your "(very) old dog". We have a 14-1/2 yr. old Aussie mix. His name is Murphy. He was about 4 months old when we rescued him from abandonment at a lake in South Carolina, where we lived at the time.

"A couple of years later we rescued a black Lab/hound mix puppy we named Maggie. Murphy and Maggie traveled across country with us when we moved to Prescott Valley in 2001. Before it became populated, we'd take them out to the open land east of the fairgrounds where they would run and chase rabbits. Never caught one of course, but oh what fun they had. Sadly, we lost Maggie to cancer a few years ago. She was only seven.

"Murphy has been a wonderful companion all these years. In his early days he was quite a Frisbee catcher but he's slowed down quite a bit, a tad overweight (could be too much people food), and on medication for arthritis, and a little bit deaf (or maybe it's selective hearing), but still lively when he wants to be.

"Murphy's favorite pastime is playing keep away with his plush squeaky toys of which he has a basketful. He still loves going for short walks early every morning and occasional jaunts with my husband to Home Depot where he delights in all the attention from clerks and customers.

"He tolerates other dogs if they are not too rowdy or aggressive but he absolutely adores people. He thinks that everyone who comes into our home is coming just to see him. "Well, aren't they?"

Thanks Marilyn and Jack, for sharing your story. If you have a story about your older dog, please send it to me with a photo!
