The Humboldt Unified School District governing board unanimously approved, and gave a standing ovation to, Cole Young as the 2014-2015 director of educational services at its March 4 meeting. Young will finish out the year as principal of Humboldt Elementary School, his 10th year in that position.

Young started with the district 20 years ago as a fourth-grade teacher. He became assistant principal of Humboldt El in 2003 under Brian Buchholtz, principal of HES and Bradshaw Mountain Middle School.

The district left unfilled the position of director of educational services when Diana Green retired at the end of the 2012-2013 school year, saving at least a base salary of $68,750 this past year.

Young has a master's degree plus 60 credit hours, putting him at step one MA+60 for a salary of $69,750.

The selection committee narrowed the applicants to two highly qualified finalists, HUSD Superintendent Paul Stanton said.

The committee included Granville Elementary Principal Bucky Bates, Glassford Hill Middle School Principal Teresa Matteson, Instructional Specialist from Liberty Traditional School Rosamaria Corradi, Director of Human Resources Dan Streeter, Director of Federal Programs and School Improvement Danny Brown, and HUSD board member Gary Hicks.

Board President Rich Adler thanked Brown for "carrying the ball" during the past year and fulfilling the duties of the director of educational services position. The board and audience applauded Brown, who said in jest he was disappointed he didn't get a standing ovation too.

Under the principalship of Young, HES earned an Excelling label for three years and an A school label for three years; earned Title I Reward School for three years; became a 2010 National Blue Ribbon School; earned a Rodel Exemplary School award; was deemed a 2013 NCEA Higher Performing School; and earned the National Title I Distinguished School award this year.

I have to congratulate Mr. Young for his new appointment and promotion in the HSD. I will miss working with him at HES. From the Bradshaw Mt. Lions to Town Council member to working with him as the Mayor. He will be missed by the students more so because he has done so much for them.

Mayor, Terry Nolan

Kudos to Mr. Young, he was my 4th grade teacher 15 years ago and one of my most memorable teachers to date.
