Former school bus driver, dispatcher and now administrative secretary Ellen Leyboldt received a standing ovation at this past Tuesday's school board meeting as the honored VIP of the Month.

Director of Transportation Kim Porter presented Leyboldt with the award and a dozen roses at the Humboldt Unified School District Governing Board meeting June 11. Porter said it was encouragement from Leyboldt that led her to apply for the director's position several years ago.

Leyboldt has worked in school transportation for 29 years, 16 of those years with Porter. She is a driver/trainer for new drivers and a third-party Commercial Driver's License tester for Arizona. In addition, Porter said Leyboldt takes care of payroll, invoicing, field trip mileage and absence forms. She is a great help to new drivers, guiding them through the application process.

"She handles difficult parent and driver situations both with ease and professionalism," Porter told the board. "Ellen is always smiling and deals with the public with integrity and self control."

About a dozen bus drivers and district employees attended the meeting and gave Leyboldt a standing ovation - along with board members and the audience - and large bouquet of balloons.
