Mountain View Elementary School has a new "classroom" on campus - an outdoor Wildlife Habitat - accomplished in collaboration with the Highland Center of Natural History and an Eagle Scout.

Patrick Archer and fellow Boy Scouts completed the fencing that surrounds the Habitat area, earning him an Eagle Scout award.

At the Aug. 13 meeting of the Humboldt Unified School District governing board, MVES Principal JoAnn Bindell presented Archer with a Certificate of Appreciation thanking him for his hard work and dedication.

Bindell also showed board members the sign that will greet students and visitors to the Habitat. It reads "Combined Project of Highland Center of Natural History and Eagle Scout Patrick Archer."

"We began planting and planning in August of last year," Bindell said of the year-long project.

With the help of students, teachers, parents, Highland Center volunteers, and Mara Kack, director of Schoolyard Habitats, the project was completed on May 4, with Archer and friends working during the summer months.

"The area was full of weeds and dead trees before we began the process," Bindell said.

Kack and Dave Irvine, Highlands executive director, also attended the board meeting.

HUSD Governing Board President Rich Adler called the Habitat a "living legacy."
