5/14/2014 12:18:00 PM Valerie Young awarded Silver Apple
Valerie Young, Bradshaw Mountain High School math teacher, received the Silver Apple award - one of only eight teachers in Arizona to earn such an honor in 2014.
Batteries Plus and Arizona's Family sponsor the award, which was made through a surprise presentation by a reporter from Channel 3, along with a check for $500.
Bradshaw student Tammy Turner submitted the nomination for Young, stating, "The reason that Ms. Young is special to me is because she banishes uncertainty and encourages each student to go a little further than they would normally go. She explains to us why we are going to need Calculus in our lives and allows us to question the practicality of the lesson.
"The best part about Ms. Young's class, though, is that she makes learning math, an otherwise boring and confusing subject, fun and interesting."
Young said she was proud to be a teacher and to receive the award.
"You never know if you are ever really making a difference, and to find out in such a grand way is so very humbling," she said.
She plans to use the money to purchase "clickers" where she can instantaneously troubleshoot problem areas with individual students before they get too far with incorrect conceptions. Or maybe she will go to Disneyland.
To view Young's surprise at receiving her award, watch Good Morning Arizona, KTVK Channel 3, between 8 and 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21.
