More than 2,000 students from seven schools attended the Western Region Leadership Conference in Phoenix on Nov. 14-17, and Bradshaw Mountain DECA members brought home first place in the Kingpin Senior Challenge.

Eleven Bradshaw students competed in the high school and college program for business and marketing students.

The six-member team was up against 140 other teams in the Kingpin Challenge, which requires students to use their leadership and problem-solving skills while involved in an Amazing Race-type scavenger hunt puzzle about the unique aspects of downtown Phoenix culture and history.

Teams scoured the downtown streets in search of clues to solve a variety of tasks and challenges in order to unlock the mystery of who exactly is the master Kingpin.

"The students were determined to take home the title this year after a third place finish from last year's team," said Mark Campbell, DECA advisor.

Team members Josh Lewis, Hayley Ehresman, Hunter Powell, Athena Bowman, Darcie Hill and McKenzie Cly each won $100.

Founded in 1946, DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges internationally.

Campbell said he was proud of the students at the start of the DECA year.

"We hope to build on this for future competitions," he said.

The conference also provided the students with workshops and training for market research papers, presentation skills and tools, promotional campaign information, and professionalism.

Other students in attendance were Victor Mata, Tyler Silva, Jacky Tam, Shahin Mokhtari, and Michael Gibbons.
