Special to the Tribune

On Thursday, Aug. 15, Tri-City College Prep students participating in the Arizona School Gun Safety Program provided by Insight, cleaned up a local shooting range near Road 151 in Prescott Valley.

Prior to the clean-up, students studied the effects of casings on the environment.

Students were driven toward casing recycling when they discovered the lead from ammunition can absorb into the ground and nearby water sources. Because of Arizona's susceptibility to wildfires and the need to protect the precious native plants and animals, range areas littered with gunshot damage pose an imminent threat to animals and humans.

In addition to the truckload of trash, students picked up 30-40 pounds of brass shell casings, three five-gallon buckets of plastic shotgun casings and several pounds of broken glass.
