School board signs Supt. Stanton for 3 more years

Describing Dr. Paul Stanton as having "done a very good job in some challenging times," Humboldt Unified School District governing board President Howard Moody and the board unanimously approved offering a three-year contract to Supt. Stanton at its Nov. 13 board meeting.

The contract is retroactive to July 1 and runs through June 30, 2015. The base salary of $114,000 remains the same as the previous contract. Per state legislation, the new contract adds a 6 percent Performance Pay clause ($6,840) upon successfully meeting the performance pay standards.

The contract includes 27 days of annual vacation, 12 days of sick leave, and a car allowance of $800 per month for use of his personal automobile for district purposes. It also requires Stanton to be available on an "as needed" basis outside of regular business hours.

Board members and Stanton will meet twice a year to assess the superintendent's Performance Pay Plan, which has two parts. The board, at its annual superintendent evaluation in December, will rate Stanton's performance. A rating of satisfactory or better will result in granting Stanton one-half the $6,840 Performance Pay.

Part Two, the other 50 percent, is met if the district receives a B or better rating from the Arizona Department of Education, and if seven of the nine schools receive a B or better.

In the statement Moody read after reconvening from executive into public session on Nov. 13, he listed the challenges facing the district as decreasing enrollment, decreasing budgets and increasing competition.

"Dr. Stanton is visible in the district, attending numerous extracurricular activities, meetings and community events," Moody said. "He is actively providing researched-based professional development for all staff. In cooperation with the administrative team, he has provided a positive, safe and orderly climate for learning."

Following the unanimous approval of the contract, Moody said, "The district progress towards improvement has been significant due to his leadership. The board is looking forward to working with Dr. Stanton to promote our shared purpose: To educate, to involve, to prepare, and to inspire our students."

The next HUSD governing board meeting takes place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at the Bradshaw Mountain Middle School library.

I hate to say it, but I agree with all of these comments. But I do not think the general public knows.

It is time to choose students and teachers/staff over admin.

I would not have voted to renew his contract and most people I know who work in the district with whom I am friends would agree. I don't think the board even considered important points.

I would bet that not living up here is a violation of his contract. My understanding is that many days he does not even come up here - he telecommutes from home...in Phoenix.

And he was a finalist for the Deer Valley job last year. I agree that he was not loyal.

He also lacks the courage to do what needs to be done to best serve the kids and teachers/staff. If there is a RIF or another year without raises (while there are options - though tough ones)...heads are gonna role. And Stanton's lack of vision and leadership and his frivolous benefits and pay will not fall by the wayside into the shadows.

To renew his contract perhaps there should have preceded by a public forum (or at least publicized more before the board meeting) so the public would have had some voice.

I agree...sad, sad day for HUSD, the kids and the staff and teachers.

The teachers in the district have not seen a raise in 5 year and because of loosing dental care it could be considered a 5% cut. Some teachers have been working for the district for 10 years and are still only on step 1. Why is there a pay schedule if it is fake. $6840 merit pay. The teachers are the ones doing the jobs and he get the extra pay.......Between the merit pay and car allowance that is 16,400. that is more than 1/2 a teachers salary on step one. Stanton does believe in stats and numbers yet the students are tested so much that is all the teachers can do is to teach to his Galelao tests. Give teachers time to teach instead of go to meetings and learn how to construct tests.

It is true. he does not live here. I understand not living here when he was hired, but it has been 3 years. He he is truly invested in our kids and this district he should live here. And perhaps not apply for jobs in Phoenix.

For his disloyalty they gave him a possible bonus??

Other are mighty angry. I am not angry - perhaps disappointed in the school board. I do not think this is the right decision for our kids.

Perhaps you can explain.

I too am feeling unsettled about this. I don't know about not living here, but he did apply for another job in Phoenix last year and was a finalist That does not show a "buy-in" in my opinion.

And I agree with the comment about the money. It is time to pay the teachers and staff who are on the front lines and not the over-bloated district administration.

WOW. Moody does it again. He is on his way out and he has not stradled the district with Stanton for another 3 years.

#1 he does not live here! He still lives in the valley. He commutes or works from down there. What buy-in does he have if he does not live in the community?

#3 He is not highly visible in schools or at events. He goes to the ones that he is required to go to. He is only slightly more visible than the last super and that is not saying much.

#4 - More money????????? With a likely budget shortfall because of 204 not passing you are going to give this man more money while you possibly layoff teachers and staff, create larger class sizes and tell teachers and staff that for the 7th year in a row they get nothing???

What a joke. Seriously. I am almost speechless.

Sad day for HUSD. I bet the new board will appreciate what you left them Moody.
