An update on the Superfund cleanup site in Dewey-Humboldt takes place from 12:30-5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, and includes not only representatives from the federal Environmental Protection Agency, but also those from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, the Arizona Department of Health Services, and the University of Arizona Superfund Research Program.

In the first half of the meeting, EPA will explain an extensive sampling investigation that will begin shortly after the New Year. It also will provide new information about residential background levels of metals in soil from residential yards.

Other agencies will discuss how residents can reduce their exposure to metals in soils or drinking water, whether from the site or naturally occurring.

The community meeting will include presentations on topics (see schedule below), as well as open house tables for informal discussions throughout the afternoon. EPA encourages those with interest in or questions about the Iron King Mine / Humboldt Smelter Superfund site, tailings piles, metals in soil or drinking water, and general matters to attend the meeting.

12:30 p.m. Introductions.

1 p.m. Upcoming field work to complete the cleanup investigation.

2 p.m. Residential yards, soils and updated info.

3:30 p.m. Drinking water from public and private well systems.

4:30 p.m. Gardening, soils, dust and recent blood and urine testing.
