PRESCOTT VALLEY - Firefighters Monday afternoon quickly extinguished a backyard fire before it could spread in the 4600 block of Katie Circle West.

Central Yavapai Fire District Battalion Chief Brad Davis said a resident was grilling on a charcoal barbecue when a gust of wind blew off the lid, allowing embers to escape and start a fire on a pile of lumber and mattresses in a neighbor's backyard.

Central Yavapai units responded and quickly knocked down the fire before a called wildland response team could arrive.

Fire Marshal Rick Chase would like to remind everyone that under current Stage Two fire restrictions, charcoal barbecues are not allowed to be used. Even gas grills must be tended diligently to prevent errant sparks.

The resident wasn't cited, CYFD administrative assistant and public education coordinator Mandy Ayars said.
