PRESCOTT VALLEY - A woman was killed and four children were injured when the SUV in which they were riding rolled over Saturday night, a police spokesman said.
Kaley Brooke Hight, 31, of Prescott Valley, was driving the 1999 GMC Envoy at about 11 p.m. northbound on Navajo when she turned west onto Lakeshore, Sgt. Brandon Bonney said. Hight apparently misjudged the turn, came up short, and crossed the shoulder, then overcorrected, causing the SUV to roll, he said.
Hight, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle, which rolled on top of her. Rescuers extricated her and took to Yavapai Regional Medical Center East, where she was pronounced dead.
The four children, a 14-year-old girl and boy and 12-year-old girl and boy, did not sustain life-threatening injuries, Bonney said, and were also taken to YRMC East. It appeared that none of them were wearing seat belts, he added, "and were very fortunate not to have sustained more significant injuries." Their names have not been released.
Investigating officers smelled the odor of marijuana, Bonney said, and found a marijuana pipe at the scene. They are still investigating whose pipe it was and who may have been using it.
Whether the driver was impaired will be determined by the county medical examiner, he said.
