After reviewing information and consulting with the Yavapai County Attorney's Office, Prescott Valley Police have determined that a fatal shooting this past August was an accident.
At about 4:30 p.m. Aug. 12, Prescott Valley Police responded to a 911 call at the 7700 block of Gentle Winds Road regarding a shooting. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Gary Wingate, 56, suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper torso. Wingate was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the police report.
Wingate's wife told police that Wingate asked her to hand him a 12-gauge shotgun. She said that she was not comfortable handling firearms, but did what her husband asked, police said. As she handed Wingate the shotgun, it discharged.
Because the incident has been ruled as an accident, no charges will be filed, according to Sgt. Brandon Bonney.
