A fire started by sparks from a welder destroyed a garage in a Prescott Valley duplex Thursday.

Central Yavapai Fire Marshal Rick Chase said firefighters responded to the fire at 6:15 p.m. Thursday in the 4800 block of Norman Road. They found the garage in the first unit of the duplex fully involved, but firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to the living area and the adjoining second unit.

People were at home in both sides of the duplex at the time of the fire, Chase said, but were able to make it outside without injuries.

"One of the occupants was welding in the garage, and went in the house to make a phone call," Chase said. "When he came back out he noticed the whole corner of the garage was on fire."

Chase said heat damaged the entire garage and its contents.
