Commissioner John Gay resigned because he moved to New York, and Jack Smith is stepping down because voters elected him to the new District 5 seat of the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors. Smith will join the county supervisors in January. Commissioner Lana Young said she plans to submit a resignation letter because she is moving to Gilbert to be closer to her two daughters, one of whom is getting married. She plans to put her house up for sale.
The announcement of the vacancies came during the commission meeting Monday, the final meeting of the year.
The commission becomes a "sounding board" for a number of things, P&Z Chairman Rick Duskey said before announcing the three pending vacancies on the commission.
Duskey, who will serve another year as chair of the panel, urged residents who watched the meeting on the cable TV access station, Channel 15, to apply at the Civic Center to fill the vacancies.
Applicants for the vacancies are interviewed by a committee of the council, which in turn forwards its recommendations to the full council.
The council appoints commissioners to serve the remainder of the terms of the panel members who stepped down. However, the appointees are eligible to serve additional terms.
