The Fain Signature Group has sold the Quailwood Green Golf Course for an undisclosed amount to a couple who works there, Fain partner Jeff Wasowicz announced Friday afternoon.

The Fain Signature Group sold the course to Shawn Sullivan and Christy Tharp because the family-owned development company wants to focus primarily on developing the emerging "downtown" area, according to Wasowicz.

The company built the 18-hole course on 122 acres adjoining the Villages at Lynx Creek subdivision off Highway 69 in 1990.

Sullivan, the course's general manager at the time of the sale, said, "It was a good opportunity. We feel we can make it function better than most golf courses because we are going to be able to own and operate it."

Tharp, his girlfriend and a two-year employee, said, "We know the course pretty well."

The deal with Sullivan and Tharp closed at 2 p.m. Friday, Wasowicz said. Sullivan, 37, and Tharp, 36, will take over the course effective today.

Wasowicz declined to say whether the par-68 golf course was losing money.

However, he said, "golf is, anyone can attest, a tough business, especially in these trying times" when players have less disposable income.

The Quailwood course reported 28,000 rounds of golf played at the course as of Friday this year and 43,328 rounds in 2011, according to figures Wasowicz supplied.

Wasowicz said the Fain Signature Group listed the golf course for sale for a year, adding he believes Sullivan and Tharp will have an opportunity to showcase their customer service skills.

Sullivan said he plans to make improvements to landscaping on the course.

He formerly managed a restaurant for eight years, and Tharp worked there as well. Sullivan and Tharp have known each other since 1991 and graduated a year apart at Bradshaw Mountain High School in Prescott Valley. They live in Prescott Valley and have four children.

They said they plan to honor existing one-year memberships at the course, which draws players from nearby and as far away as the Phoenix area.

The golf course has seven employees, including those working in the restaurant. The restaurant maintains the same hours as the golf course: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
