Residents here will get a second sporting goods store with the opening before Christmas of Dick's Sporting Goods near Sam's Club, town officials announced Wednesday.

Dick's has signed a lease with Kitchell, the Phoenix-based developer of the Prescott Valley Crossroads shopping center on both sides of Highway 69 at Sundog Ranch Road.

Dick's will occupy a 35,000-square-foot building, town planner Ruth Mayday said.

"They are doing preliminary site work right now," Mayday said. She added Kitchell and the architect plan to conduct a pre-bid meeting next Thursday in advance of a Town Council meeting that evening in which the final development plan will be on the council agenda.

The store will be the first Dick's in northern Arizona, according to a news release from Kitchell. Dick's operates 518 Dick's Sporting Goods stores in 44 states, 81 Golf Galaxy stores in 30 states, and e-commerce websites and catalog operations for Dick's and Golf Galaxy.

Dick's will join other major tenants at Prescott Valley Crossroads including Sam's Club, Hobby Lobby, Home Depot and Dollar Tree. Its closest competition is Big 5, which opened in 2000 at the 6100 block of East Highway 69.

The arrival of Dick's came as good news to Mayor Harvey Skoog, who said, "We are just happy as can be. We are looking at a banner year. We are always looking for jobs. Of course, the revenue is going to be a good thing, too."
