A motorist apparently fleeing from police and a bicyclist who struck a vehicle sustained serious injuries in separate accidents Tuesday afternoon off Lakeshore Drive.
The driver of a 2002 Subaru, who was speeding at about 70 mph in a 25 mph zone, lost control of his vehicle on a curve on Papago Lane, went airborne and landed in a drainage ditch shortly after 4 p.m., Prescott Valley police Sgt. Brandon Bonney reported. The vehicle caught fire as the driver, a 29-year-old man from Prescott Valley, was pinned inside.
A police corporal following the suspect retrieved a fire extinguisher from his patrol vehicle and put out the fire, and rescue workers from the Central Yavapai Fire District extricated the driver from the vehicle, Bonney said. Life Line Ambulance workers lifted the motorist onto a stretcher, and a helicopter flew him to a Phoenix-area hospital at around 4:40 p.m.
Nearby residents in the 9000 block of East Lakeshore Drive gathered to watch.
"I was just pulling into my garage, and I heard a car speeding going down the street at least 80 miles per hour," Adam Trzeciak said.
Neighbor Greg Smith commented, "He was flying. You could hear him screeching."
Bonney said the corporal first encountered the motorist in the 3700 block of Navajo Drive while conducting speed enforcement.
"It was never an official pursuit," Bonney said, adding police are investigating the matter as a possible unlawful flight from law enforcement.
"They are investigating the possibility of impairment as an open container of alcohol was found in the vehicle," Bonney said.
Bonney said alcohol could also have been a factor in an accident reported at 4:20 p.m. in which a 31-year-old woman reportedly struck a vehicle as she rode a bicycle north on Tani Road with her 2-year-old daughter in a carrier.
Bonney said witnesses reported the woman rode recklessly and did not yield at a stop sign at Lakeshore. She sustained serious injuries, and her daughter was taken to Yavapai Regional Medical Center East Campus in Prescott Valley for unknown injuries.
The girl wore a helmet, but her mother did not, Bonney said.
