PVPD: Local teen started fire near StoneRidge subdivision
Special to the Tribune

A teenage boy who lit a fire that got out of control Tuesday on a small mountain south of the StoneRidge subdivision in Prescott Valley will be charged with misdemeanor reckless burning, Prescott Valley Police Sgt. Brandon Bonney said.

Fire crews responded and contained the fire to two acres.

Investigators developed leads at the scene that indicated children might be to blame for the fire, and eventually identified a 14-year-old Prescott Valley boy as having started the fire, Bonney said.

The teenager told investigators he was lightning leaves and twigs on fire and it got out of control, Bonney said.

The Prescott Valley Police Department and Central Yavapai Fire District remind people that it is important to use caution with any type of open flames or heat sources.

High winds and dry conditions increase the chances of a wildfire that can damage vegetation, homes, and injure people.

People should call their local fire department/district for burn restrictions and other safety information, and warn their children about the danger of playing with fire.
