Walmart is on track to go out to bid for construction on its superstore site here in February, the town's community development director, Richard Parker, said.
Parker said he spoke this week to a Walmart official about the status of the proposed supercenter, which has been in the works for at least six years.
"It's a nine-month build, so it would open before December of 2013," Parker said. He added the building permit for the store proposed for about 19 acres on the southwest corner of Lakeshore Drive and Glassford Hill Road has been ready since February for Walmart to pick up.
Walmart's public affairs staff at corporate headquarters in Bentonville, Ark., did not respond to a request via email for comment.
Walmart initially planned to open the store in 2007, Parker said. However, Walmart postponed plans pending the outcome of a March 2007 election in which voters reaffirmed decisions by the Planning and Zoning Commission and Town Council to rezone the site to accommodate the big-box store.
The store opening faced further delays because of the Great Recession that began in late 2007, Parker said.
When the supercenter eventually opens, it will become the third Walmart superstore in the tri-city area. Walmart has two superstores in Prescott: one at Highway 69 at Prescott Lakes Parkway and the other on Gail Gardner Way.
